Let the Academic Hell Begin: Some Cultural Confessions

Yes, folks, it’s been quite some time now since I have been posting here at Cultural Learnings, and I apologize for that – yesterday was our lowest day in six months, so it’s clear that the lack of productivity is hurting big time. Since I still don’t really have time to put together anything all that impressive (I MAY be back for The Amazing Race tonight, since it’s the only thing on), I thought I’d let you know some of what I would have posted about.

  • Heroes’ finale I probably had time to discuss, but it was just so objectionable that I really didn’t feel like it. I’ve been mulling putting together another post on the series, which might have to wait for the Christmas break when it will be considerably less relevant. In short: finale bad, season bad, interest waning.
  • Having seen the final two episodes of Dexter, I can say that the season ends on a high note…but that doesn’t mean I’m still not frustrated by the show’s inability to put together a cohesive season. They’ve yet to get the middle section right, and to be honest the finale is even a little bit too much of a downer. It’s still one of the strongest shows on television right now, and is likely guaranteed a third season, but I really think that they need to re-evaluate some elements of their story arc structure. Mainly Lila. But, watch for yourself, it’s an exciting two hours of TV.
  • Speaking of Dexter, I’d love to delve into the writer’s strike a little more and try to imagine scenes from the show in neutered forms as CBS is considering repurposing the series (Edited for both time and content) for their strike-riddled schedule. I like this plan, to be honest: stick it after CSI on Thursdays, and I think it could do some good for the series. However, I need there to be a disclaimer that says “This show has been edited, so buy the DVD too you puritan!”
  • I don’t think I ever talked about House’s new team, even though that happened almost two weeks ago. It’s…good? I guess. I loved Anne Dudek in the role of Cutthroat Bitch, so it was disappointing to see her go in some senses, but I think that the team has a lot of potential. However, they REALLY needed to give Chase/Cameron something to do. I fear we’re dangerously close to “Chase and Cameron become the patients and one of them dies, driving the other one back onto House’s team” (Maybe for the Superbowl episode!), and I don’t particularly think we need that storyline.

I’ll be back over the next few days with my Mad Men essay as well as some ways you can pass your time while I am not providing as much distraction as I’d like to.

Sound Off! Week – Hey! Nielsen – Is it Making a Difference?

I have to apologize for not being able to post yesterday: I’m currently working with the students’ union as part of some pre-faculty strike preparations, so that took up a great deal of my time. As a result, I’m going to set us back a few days and finish this series on Sunday with some final recommendations. But, before I head out for the weekend, I want to leave what I think are some of the most important statements that Jericho and Supernatural fans made to me in their responses.

The reality is that Hey! Nielsen is a social networking site with a purpose: to better inform the Nielsen Company and their advertisers/partners about what parts of television, movies, etc. are most popular. The site is sold as a way to take the example of Jericho’s fandom to the next level, and this is why Jericho and Supernatural fans rushed to the new medium.

But the problem that the site faces is that it has no proof (as of this writing) that this is actually making a difference. There is no tangible return on their involvement: they spend a week pouring their hearts out about their favourite show, but did that make a difference? And, if it didn’t, why should they bother with this site when they’re already posting on message boards or on LiveJournal in the same fashion?

I know that the site doesn’t purport to have a direct impact on Nielsen ratings, but I think that the “purpose” of the site has led to a great deal of disinterest in its development. It’s one thing to post on a message board, such as the CBS Jericho Message Boards: you know you’re making a difference, but you have no illusion of your post being read by Nina Tassler and for Jericho to receive a third season order in the process.

But when you post on Hey! Nielsen, there is that illusion: that, in some way, being #1 on this site could be a breakthrough for your fandom. But then nothing happens: Supernatural’s ratings haven’t seen any sort of spike, Jericho doesn’t have a timeslot yet, and the Dresden Files (Newcomers to the Hey! Nielsen game, and to this blog. Welcome!) still remains canceled. People see this and, for obvious reasons, start to wonder if it was all a waste of time.

What Hey! Nielsen needs to do now is give its users at least some sense that someone is listening: I don’t care if it’s a PR letter from the head of the Nielsen Company, the first in its user-led focus groups being announced, or something to prove that they’re paying attention. A social networking site that purports to being a megaphone for fans to extend their views to a more important audience is a novel concept, but there needs to be some reciprocity in the relationship.

For now, here are what Jericho and Supernatural Fans thought of the site’s future differences, read below. If you have your own thoughts from the perspective of another fan group, let us know in the comments below!

Another Leave of Absence

Hey folks,

It’s against my better judgment (Assuming of course, that said judgment would rather blog than write essays), but I’m going to have to take yet another hiatus from blogging for awhile. Essay progress is looking good at this stage (Yay!), but I don’t think it’s quite to the point where I can start blogging. So, in the meantime, enjoy Wednesday night’s TV (Lost looks great: I’ll be watching, not blogging), and I’ll be back on Friday with some Cultural Catchup.
