Monday Night Wrapup: Tramp Stamp, Ratings and Weeds

Monday Night Wrapup

September 25th, 2007

How I Met Your Mother“Wait for it…”

What: The 3rd Season Premiere of my new favourite multi-camera sitcom on television. And yes, that’s still a positive thing even when it’s also the only one.

The Highlights: Ted’s “Tramp Stamp,” Ted’s various mid-shave beards, Enrique Iglesias and Mandy Moore in unobtrusive guest appearances, Barney in general, the Slap Bet Countdown, and the hint that we’ll finally start some progress on the titular story.

The Lowlights: A little light on Barney, and while Ted had some great moments this episode the narrative is better when he’s not at its center.

Monday Night’s RatingsOld Defeats New

What: The Fast National Nielsen Ratings for the first night of TV’s new season from PIFeedback.

Winners: Dancing with the Stars, Two and a Half Men, and CSI: Miami all dominated the night, proving that new programming isn’t going to suddenly take over from reality, cheesy comedies and procedural drama on the night. Heroes makes this list as well, although I must admit that I wonder how long it can sustain those numbers with such a weak premiere.

The New Shows: Chuck, Journeyman and The Big Bang Theory all passed the initial test with passable numbers (All averaging almost the same rating), so next week will be their big challenge. Journeyman, however, is in trouble thanks to dropping its Heroes lead-in, while The Big Bang Theory built from How I Met Your Mother.

The Losers: K-Ville dropped considerably from its premiere when faced with Heroes, so it’s in some trouble. And, How I Met Your Mother dropped considerably from its performance last year, and needs to hope for improvement or else it might get the boot at midseason for New Adventures of Old Christine.

Weeds“He Taught Me How to Drive-By”

What: Weeds’ seventh episode of the season, and the first since Mary-Kate Olsen’s debut last week, which I didn’t blog about due to its innocuous nature: she wasn’t terrible, she wasn’t noteworthy, she’s just there.

Heroes – “…Four Months Later”

“…Four Months Later”

September 24th, 2007

Slate recently posted an article about overpopulation against television casts, referring to it as a “plague.” As if to prove their point, Heroes started its second season struggling to come to terms with its expanding cast, and ignoring several of its key characters in the process. A meandering and inconclusive hour, “…Four Months Later” felt like we were being shown what a better writer could have done through subtle hints, as opposed to anything of true consequence.

The episode’s main focus was establishing that, forced to live normal lives due to the threat of The Company, our heroes are miserable. Noah moved from Primatech to Copy Kingdom, Claire went from athletic cheerleader to quiet Badminton player, and Nathan went from politician to alcoholic. It is only Parkman who gets out lucky, able to use his ability to read minds discreetly, earning a job as an NYPD Detective. Everyone else is suffering, big time. And do you know what? That doesn’t make for very exciting television.

Hey! Nielsen: Giving Voice to Internet Fandom

Late last week, I was invited to take part in a private beta for a new website called Hey! Nielsen. And yes, it is that Nielsen company, the same one that has been attacked from all sides for its misrepresentation of a show’s true popularity. But, impressively, Nielsen is stepping outside of their boxes and notepads, instead turning to the social networking craze of the internet to find a new way of measuring popularity.

http://www.heynielsen.com

The result is a website that, in my experience with it, has a great deal of potential in terms of monitoring internet chatter. However, the most important thing at this point is that people actually start using this service to their advantage. Starting today (Monday, September 24th), the private beta becomes public, and the world gets a chance to make their opinion heard even without a fancy box sitting on their television.

Users are able to do three things:

  • Post their own opinions about TV Shows, Movies, Celebrities, Music and Internet sites like Jericho Monster or TelevisionWithoutPity.
  • React to other people’s opinions and post comments about their agreement/disagreement.
  • Rate each TV Show/Movie/etc. based on their own preference so people can view their profile and get an idea of their personal taste.

For fans of a series like Jericho, which is actually mentioned in the site’s opening introduction as an example of how this can work, this is a fantastic opportunity for them to have their voices heard. However, I would suggest that anyone who joins from Jericho’s legion of fans, or the fans of any other show, that they use this service as more than just promotion. Hey! Nielsen is about both what people like and don’t like, so while promoting your favourite show be sure to offer opinions on others.

On a personal level, Cultural Learnings was selected to take part in the Best of TV Blogs Contest being held for about the next month or so. As part of that, there has been an area set up where you can post opinions about this site, as well as a whole host of much better TV websites, and then there are some prizes awarded. So if you want to show me some love, or perhaps make a commentary about how awful a human being I am, feel free to do so. Just rate the site, and then leave a comment if you wish.

Hey! Nielsen – Cultural Learnings’ Contest Entry

There are a lot of exciting things planned for the site: widgets, feeds, and a TV viewing calendar feature are all planned for the future, although are not likely to be present in the public beta starting tomorrow. I’ll be posting some opinions throughout the day, especially with some big premieres to come this evening, so stay tuned: I’ll post them here once they’re up so you can get a feel for how the service works.

An Act of Desperation: 24 and the Resurrection of Tony Almeida

Normally, I would be remiss to place an unmarked spoiler directly within my thread title; I count myself amongst those who universally despise spoilers, and would love to attempt to keep this a secret. However, the producers of 24 and FOX don’t want to keep a secret: they want the whole world to know that they’re bringing beloved Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard, pictured with still dead Michelle) back from near-certain death for the show’s seventh season in January.

Although one could certainly make an argument that this resurrection (Which opens up more plot holes than I’d care to imagine) signifies the moment at which 24 jumped the proverbial shark, I would contend that this is nothing compared to the larger problem: a show built on surprising its audience, 24 has taken a potentially shocking revelation and turned it into a talking point.

Cultural Learnings’ Fall 2007 Lineup: Fridays

Fridays aren’t a big night for television: even in the wake of a few new shows debuting (Women’s Murder Club for ABC, Moonlight for CBS), I really can’t say that much on the night piques my interest. However, that doesn’t mean that I won’t be watching anything: unlike last year, there’s a show on Fridays that is worth the time of every TV viewer out there.

Friday Night Lights

Last week, I received my Friday Night Lights DVDs on Tuesday evening. By Saturday night, I had completed the entire 22 episode season. While light on features, the incredibly well-priced DVD collection reminded me of two things: that this was by far one of the best shows on television last season, and that I didn’t give it enough credit at the time.

Why FNL is Emmy Worthy – Cultural Learnings

I’ll write more about Friday Night Lights when its debut in early October moves closer, but for now here’s something for those in the U.S.: until the end of the weekend, Yahoo! has the premiere streaming in its entirety. Check it out, and feel proud that you’re able to see something that I (As a Canadian) cannot see.
